Japan is littered with camp sites, with everything from small forest spots, to municaly run camping fields, they are everywhere - but not always easy to find at first.

A list of 100 Japanese mountain peaks was published in 1964 by mountaineer Kyuya Fukada in his book: Nihon Hyakumeizan - the list being the author's 100 favourite mountains in Japan.

According to Lonely Planet, "Japan is a hiker's wonderland".

Generalisations aside, Japan really does offer a fantastic range of hiking opportunities.

Skiing is popular in Japan - the evidence is there with the country supporting more than 600 ski resorts from the northern island of Hokkaido to the southern island of Kyushu.
