Hiking In Japan

According to Lonely Planet, "Japan is a hiker's wonderland".

Generalisations aside, Japan really does offer a fantastic range of hiking opportunities.

Japans population, currently around 127 million people, lives in an area of roughly the same size as Germany, 11% smaller than California, or 277,944 km2 (which ever is easier to equate). However, about 73 percent of Japan is forested, mountainous, and unsuitable for agricultural, industrial, or residential use (source).

What does this mean? Japan has a large range of open forest and mountain terrain ideal for both easy and challenging hiking.

In fact, Japan is packed with hiking trails, and hiking has been part of the Japanese pastime for many years. Probably the most famous pioneer of modern hiking in japan is Kyuya Fukada, author of the Nihon Hyakumeizan.
